Making a Boston Ballet reprise after showings in 2010 and 2013 is George Balanchine’s Coppélia, a wonderfully funny and witty ballet. The company will be joined at the Boston Opera House by students of the affiliate Boston Ballet School.
“Coppélia, considered one of the greatest comedic ballets, comes alive through Balanchine’s classic choreography and Delibes’ symphonic score. It is a wonderful and rare opportunity for audiences of all ages to experience the charm and beauty of Balanchine’s delightful ballet.”
– Mikko Nissinen, Artistic Director of Boston Ballet
The story of Coppélia is based on the book by Charles Nuitter, after E.T.A. Hoffman’s “Der Sandmann” and tells of the adventures that come to be when Frantz, Swanhilda’s boyfriend, becomes infatuated with Coppélia. Coppélia is not human, though, but rather a life-sized doll created by the eccentric Dr. Coppélius.
Léo Delibes’ wonderful score will accompany Balanchine’s 1974 choreography and will be played by the Boston Ballet Orchestra under the baton of Music Director Mischa Santora.
Coppélia runs from March 21-31, 2019 and is an event for the entire family; there are even discounted tickets available for youths aged 2-17. More details about the performance can be found here.
